Book Challenge-Book#18

This is a book that I have been wanting to read all year because I have heard so much about it. I didn’t have a copy, and neither did our library. I finally found it at a thrift store (I love to shop for books at these places!!). 🙂

It was just as good as everyone has talked about. It touches your heart (and makes you cry). I have found that these kinds of books are becoming my favorite with young adult/6th grade books.

Freak the Mighty-by Rodman Philbrick

There is also another book by this author-Max the Mighty-which is about one of the characters from Freak the Mighty. Gotta get it now! 🙂

  1. LOVE this book. I’ve done it as a read aloud a few times. This year one of my guided reading groups studied it – they loved it, too. I’ve read Max the Mighty, and enjoyed it, but in my opinion, Freak the Mighty is better. I’ve shown the movie, Simon Burch, to the students after we’ve read the book – definitely brings a tear to your eye!

    • Jen-
I didn’t realize there was a movie to go along with it until I got to the end of the book-I just hope it is rated g so I can show it in school (compare and contrast book and movie). And, isn’t Simon Burch the little boy who played in Jerry Macguire? OMG-he is so cute! I did The Westing Game this past year as a read aloud (boy that is a complicated one at the beginning)-then we watched the movie-the kids were so disappointed, which was kind of in my favor so that I could point out that “books are usually better than the movies”! 🙂
