Read and Write 180-Day 2
Posted by shannonjoe
Day 2 of the school year is over, and it is FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rest time! 🙂 I lost a lot of sleep this past week getting ready for the school year (I always do), and yesterday was a long day being the 1st day, going over procedures and routines, etc…..
Today was spent getting to know the kids a little better. First they worked on a 2 page packet where they wrote about things they want to improve on this year-setting goals for the year. I let them share voluntarily-most didn’t want to share out loud (which goes to show you that we are going to accomplish a whole lot in small group this year instead of whole group! :)). One student said he wants to be able to read on grade level because he can’t right now. Made my heart break! One student said she wants to be able to comprehend when she reads because it’s hard for her. You know, these kids “know” what they want to get better at-why not listen to them and help them??? That type of instruction goes straight back to the CAFE system of individual goals. I can’t wait to get started-I think I’m going to begin Daily 5(I call it the FAb Five) Monday and CAFE a week from Monday.
We did a share activity with snack sized bags of m&ms. Here is a link to the activity:
I modified the activity to fit within our time constraints-Each student got a snack bag of m&ms. They could only choose 1 color. Then they had to share something about themselves and the color determined what they had to share.

Great way to learn about the kids, AND they got to eat candy! 🙂
I had them complete an interest survey about their reading-I can’t wait to read these over the weekend! I’ll know how to match the kids with books and they kind of guidance they will need. Here is the interest survey that I created over the summer.
They got to check out books from our classroom library today, and I think several of them were very excited!!! 🙂
Then I showed them how to create a wordle on the internet. I’m going to try and incorporate technology into our curriculum this year. They thought the wordle thing was cool. I typed all of their names into http://www.wordle.net to show them that it creates word clouds. They were oohing and aahing.
We played homeworkoply since it was Friday and they had homework last night. They seemed to love it! 🙂 I’ve got to make more cards to go with the game. Here is the link if you want to put a homeworkopoly gameboard in your room.
The last thing that we did was talk a little about our reading/writing binder for our class. I told them we would section it off next week and get it organized. Today we just put an “IPOD” sheet on the front cover. IPOD stands for “I’m Prepared & Organized Daily”. I found this idea on the internet. http://msjensenclass-teacherresources.wikispaces.com/Student+Organization
So, today was a good day at school-hope to have 178 more good days! 🙂
