Picture books for 6th graders? You bet! I am going to use them as read alouds for my reading(comprehension strategies) and writing(writing traits) mini-lessons this year. I am also going to allow my kids to read them. GASP! Yes, they will be able to read picture books! 🙂
Here’s the deal. Our book goal for the year will be 50 books. 40 of them have to be chapter books within different genres, and 10 of them can be picture books. Here’s the catch. The picture books have to come from MY classroom library. This way I will have control over which ones they get to read. (Teehee) The other catch is this-they have to respond to the picture book by analyzing it.
I knew I wanted them to respond to the picture book in some format, but I didn’t want it to be the “reading response” letter that they are going to have to write each week about their choice book. So I surfed the internet and found a picture book analysis sheet. Then I tweaked it to fit what I wanted them to do.
Here is the link to the website where I found the original document. I want to give them the credit for producing the analysis sheet. 🙂
Not only do they have to read 10 picture books this year, but we will periodically read them in small groups.
This is the analysis sheet that they will use when working in small groups.
