Writing to inform-Reindeer Report

I will be adding writing units that we do in 6th grade as we do them so please be patient. 🙂

Teaching Process:

1. Talk to the kids about the assignment. Brainstorm the things that should be included in the report. We came up with eating habits, here they live, type of habitat, physical characteristics. Have them draw a graphic organizer where they will take notes. I let them choose how they wanted to arrange their information, but here is a cute graphic organizer that another teacher made.

2. Show the video/slideshow to the kids from national geographic. Read it with them. Have them take notes on their organizer as you read it.

I did steps 1 and 2 on the same day.

3. Make copies of the article from a-z for each student. Use the elmo to project your copy. Have them read it silently. Then read it to them. Read it again, and this time show them how to highlight the important information that you want them to include in their report. I then told them that they would be taking the highlighted parts of the article and jotting those things down on their graphic organizer UNLESS it is already on their organizer. As they go through the highlighted parts show them how to check each fact off to make it easier to keep up with. 🙂 Here is a picture of the article that I used.

Nicole-We won’t work on this on Friday (12/9) because it’s our test day. We will continue next week with the following articles and maybe an encyclopedia and picture book (?) if I can find one! This weekend I am going to make an outline that they will fill in after we take notes from all the articles. I’ll upload it to this page when I make it. I hope all of this helps. Oh, one more thing-I think that next week I might have them finish taking notes from the articles at stations. I’ll figure that out this weekend too and write about it on this page. This is the 1st time I have done this so I’m working it out as I go along! 🙂 Email me again if you need me!
