It’s Monday-What Are You Reading?

Check out what Jen, Kellee, and Mrs. Duke are reading:

Teach Mentor Texts

Mrs. Duke

I read THE BEST book I think I have ever read this past week! You have got to get this book and read it-you will not be disappointed! Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt is unbelievable. He takes you inside the head of Doug, a middle school kid, who not only has to face the daily drudgery of a middle school life, but also has to move to a new town and live with the abuse of his father. You will love Doug and be sad to let him go.

I’m currently reading Clarice Bean Spells Trouble by Lauren Child. Oh, so funny! I thought I had met a truly unique character in the Clementine books, but Clarice is giving Clementine a run for her money. I.love.her. I have laughed out loud so much while reading this book-I thinks she’s a little ADD! But who isn’t???? If you like simple reads with quirky characters who make you laugh-read it!

This is what I have planned in the upcoming week. I’ll finish Clarice Bean Spells Trouble. My list is this:

The Day my Butt Went Psycho by Andy Griffiths (Yes, I think my 6th graders will like it-don’t they like all disgusting things??)

And not sure what else-it’s going to be busy so we’ll see.

What have you read lately?

Okay For Now

I just finished reading Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt, and it was everything I expected and more!!!

Doug is a normal junior high school student with a normal life. Almost. His father is a…well, I can’t really write that in this review. Let’s just say he is not the kind of father that anybody dreams about having! Doug and his family have to move to a small town-Marysville-which he thinks is “stupid”. Actually, he thinks a lot of things are “stupid”, and I agree with him about most. Doug’s personality will have you chuckling out loud at times and trying not to cry at others. Who am I kidding? I did cry while reading this book-a few times! Doug finds solace from several things-the library, the birds, drawing, his new friend, Lil, and his mom’s smile.

This is a book that will make you want to reach in and wrap your arms around Doug to comfort him. It is a must read, and was so hard to put down when I actually had to “do” things. I miss Doug already. 🙂

Here’s a book trailer from Gary Schmidt himself!

Ready for a good read?

If you are like me and try to read kids’ books (and like them!) then you MUST read The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt!! I read it because someone had recommended it, and I was not disappointed. It’s a mixture of humor (I love Holling’s sense of humor-he is the main character), crazy happenings at a middle school in the late 60’s, and some deep issues like war, grief, and just life in general. Holling will keep you laughing (and sometimes out loud)!

So make that trip to Books-a-Million or get it on your kindle or nook or ipad or…….  🙂 I give this one 5 stars!! Big golden ones!
